DeMao Retail Announces New 70,000 SF Grocery Development in Saint John, IN

Air Alchemist, a division of DeMao Retail, is leading the redevelopment of the former Kmart site on Wicker Ave (US Highway 41) into a 70,000 square foot grocery store in Saint John, Indiana. This project will revitalize the prime 5.63-acre property within the area's most frequented retail corridor. Saint John is a growing retail trade destination where continued development is anticipated.
Since Kmart closed their doors on their Saint John location in 2012, it has unfortunately become an eyesore to an otherwise prosperous location. Northwest Indiana Times wrote, “Many people in St. John have since complained about the property being blighted and remaining undeveloped. St. John is one of the fastest growing communities in Indiana and one of the more affluent in Northwest Indiana.” (see full article here)

Jewel-Osco, one of Albertsons' (NYSE: ACI) 18 banner brands, will anchor the development. With 189 stores primarily in the Chicago metropolitan area, Jewel-Osco has been a trusted regional supermarket chain since becoming an Albertsons subsidiary in 1999.
The City of Saint John has played an instrumental role in supporting growth initiatives to facilitate economic expansion. This grocery development is expected to enhance local infrastructure, improve traffic flow at 96th Place and the signalized intersection at US 41, and attract additional businesses to the area.
